Good Food Fund launches for food start-ups

We’re partnering with Big Society Capital, the UK’s leading social impact-led investor, to launch the Good Food Fund. The new venture fund will help healthier, affordable start-ups reach the market.

The £1.8 million fund will also provide business support, designed to help brands reach an accessible and sustainable price point.

Why we need healthier options on the market

In 2018, our joint report Healthy Returns looked at the consumer behaviour of families on different incomes. The research suggested that increasing the availability of affordable, tasty, convenient and healthier food changes purchasing habits. 

With the Good Food Fund, we want to create healthier options so families benefit from healthier shopping baskets. After-school snacks will be a key focus, with the long-term aim of transforming the options available to families on lower incomes.

The brands who receive funding all share the commitment to bring healthier, affordable children’s food to the market. And in the context of the pandemic, initiatives that improve access to healthier options are needed more than ever.

We know that childhood obesity is an issue of inequality. The current market caters for cheap, unhealthy options. This leaves customers paying a high premium for healthy foods to cover costs. Together with our partners, we are taking on a big and exciting challenge as we aim to disrupt the food retail market.

Working with businesses to disrupt the food market

This project is part of the streets strand of our childhood obesity programme. In this strand, we work with the commercial sector to improve young people’s access to nutritious food. 

Mission Ventures provide entrepreneurs and new brands with strategic guidance and help them build opportunities with investors. They will provide business support as part of the fund.

The venture capital fund will be managed by Ascension Ventures, who back entrepreneurs and businesses by providing capital, access to networks and expert mentorship.
